CelcomDigi pilots AI traffic platform to ease jams in Petaling Jaya

Wed, 24th Sep 2025

CelcomDigi has announced a collaboration with multiple Malaysian government authorities to develop the nation's first artificial intelligence-powered traffic intelligence platform.

The collaboration includes MyDigital Corporation, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), and aims to create a large-scale solution for urban mobility management using neural networks and advanced analytics. The development supports the nation's Digital Economy Blueprint and ambitions towards smart city infrastructure.

Partnership details

CelcomDigi, a telecommunications network operator, is working with MBPJ to address challenges such as traffic congestion, long waiting times at intersections, and road safety concerns. The project will utilise CelcomDigi's capabilities in connectivity and artificial intelligence alongside MBPJ's urban management responsibilities. Pilot locations for this solution include parts of the Damansara constituency in Petaling Jaya, such as PJ Sentral, SS2, and areas spanning the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP) highway.

Through its AI-driven platforms and analytics expertise, CelcomDigi will generate real-time traffic insights by integrating its data with council systems. These insights are designed to support smarter management of traffic lights, guide urban planning, and provide recommendations for dynamic road diversions, particularly during peak hours or construction activities.

Traffic system improvements

The newly announced platform will feature predictive analytics capable of optimising traffic light cycles to reduce bottlenecks and queue times, in addition to modelling to assist authorities in road design and infrastructure decisions. Dynamic suggestions will also be provided to relieve congestion in real time, particularly during emergencies or planned roadworks.

The initiative highlights Malaysia's intention to leverage technologies such as AI and 5G within public infrastructure, aligning with national ambitions to foster more sustainable and connected urban environments.

Official statements

Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, who officiated the collaboration, said:

"This collaboration exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving Malaysia's smart city agenda. By bringing together government, industry and technology expertise, we are making cities more liveable, sustainable, and efficient. The use of AI-powered traffic intelligence in Petaling Jaya is a clear demonstration of how Malaysia's Digital Economy Blueprint and smart city vision are becoming reality, improving lives for the rakyat while paving the way for nationwide adoption. This is also in line with our AI Nation agenda."

Albern Murty, CelcomDigi's Acting Chief Executive Officer, commented:

"This initiative is a powerful example of how industry and government can come together to solve urban challenges by leveraging technology to deliver meaningful impacts for the nation. This pilot in Petaling Jaya is a first step towards scaling intelligent traffic systems nationwide, building a digital ecosystem where AI and connectivity come together to create safer, smarter, and more efficient cities."

Mohamad Zahri Samingon, Mayor of Petaling Jaya, provided further context on local benefits:

"Petaling Jaya is proud to be the first city in Malaysia to pilot this cutting-edge traffic intelligence solution. Traffic congestion and urban mobility are long-standing challenges for our community, and this initiative gives us a new way to manage them effectively. With the support of the government agencies and CelcomDigi, we are bringing smarter, data-driven infrastructure to PJ that will directly benefit our residents and set a model for other cities in Malaysia."

National context

The partnership is also aligned with Malaysia's National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative, which seeks to strengthen the country's digital foundations. CelcomDigi and its partners expect to scale this 5G AI-powered solution to other major cities across the country, supporting the development of a more robust digital transport ecosystem.
