Indosat & ZTE launch microwave network across Indonesia
Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and ZTE Corporation have launched a significant partnership to create a comprehensive microwave backbone transmission network throughout Indonesia.
This joint effort, involving the deployment of over 550 ultra-capacity backbone microwave links, aims to provide significant mobile voice and data services to major cities and remote islands, addressing the digital divide in Indonesia. Approximately 80% of major cities and remote areas are now covered by this network.
Desmond Cheung, Director and Chief Technology Officer at Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, expressed the company's commitment to enhancing access to digital services across Indonesia. He stated, "At Indosat, we are committed to empowering Indonesia by bridging the digital divide. This partnership with ZTE reflects our dedication to connecting communities across the nation, regardless of geographic challenges. By deploying advanced technology, we are not only improving digital experience but also unlocking opportunities for economic and social progress, creating a brighter digital future for Indonesia."
Indonesia's unique geographical challenges, including thousands of islands and rugged terrain, have made expanding traditional communication infrastructure difficult. The new microwave network is designed to overcome these challenges, offering ultra-capacity and long-distance transmission even in previously inaccessible regions.
The technology integrates features such as multi-frequency Ultra Broadband Antennas (UBA) and customised Branching Units, enhancing cost-efficiency and performance while reducing the need for heavy equipment. These technological advances are built to withstand Indonesia's harsh environmental conditions, including severe weather and corrosion. The scalable design also allows for significant expansion, supporting capacity increases and broader coverage.
Kevin Chen, Sales Director at PT. ZTE Indonesia, expressed optimism about the positive impact of this collaboration, saying, "We believe this successful collaboration will breathe fresh life into Indonesia's digital transformation journey. When residents in remote areas of Indonesia went online and enjoy the high-quality internet service, we were as excited as they were! ZTE is committed to seizing strategic opportunities in digitalisation, intelligence, and low-carbon development. ZTE Microwave Backbone connects ZTE, IOH and Indonesian residents together, will explore more new possibilities in communication ways, contributing to the digital economic growth of Indonesia and the global community."
The initiative has boosted Indosat's subscriber numbers, particularly in remote regions like Sumatra and Kalimantan, where network backhaul capacity has notably increased. Residents in these areas now benefit from continuous access to information, online education, and entertainment, stimulating local economies by creating jobs, enhancing tourism, and fostering knowledge exchange. Improved connectivity also supports advancements in the healthcare and education sectors.
Indosat and ZTE are focused on deepening their collaboration to enhance network coverage in Indonesia further. Their future efforts aim to extend the reach of communication infrastructure, enabling more communities to benefit from digital advancements. The companies remain committed to improving product capabilities, reducing costs, and delivering solutions that will contribute to the thriving of Indonesians in the digital era.
