JLR partners with Tata to enhance connected driving experiences
JLR and Tata Communications have announced an extended partnership to integrate the Tata Communications MOVE platform into JLR's upcoming software-defined vehicles, planning to ensure continuous connectivity across 120 countries.
The collaboration aims to enhance customer driving experiences by integrating robust wireless communication technologies supported by a network of more than 600 global mobile network operators, providing uninterrupted connectivity even in regions with challenging environments. For drivers, this means reliable connectivity in remote locations and seamless cross-border travel.
JLR's next-generation medium-sized SUVs will employ the Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) that benefits from Tata Communications MOVE platform, allowing vehicles to transition smoothly between different mobile networks. This development aims to facilitate consistent access to connected services such as media streaming and enhance the security of data exchanges.
JLR plans to leverage this platform to deliver more frequent and efficient software over-the-air updates, supporting the introduction of new features and functions in their vehicles.
Mark Brogden, Director of Digital Product Platform Off-Board at JLR, remarked: "JLR was the first luxury vehicle manufacturer to introduce dual modem, dual eSIM design for enhanced connectivity with the launch of Defender in 2020. The partnership with Tata Communications is the next step in our software-defined vehicle journey, offering highly secure and cost-effective data connectivity across 120 countries."
Brogden continued, "Starting in 2026 with our next generation of medium-size luxury SUVs, Tata Communications MOVE aims to deliver continuous connected experiences for our clients, offering features and new software updates over-the-air to meet the expectations of our luxury client base.''
The integration of Tata Communications MOVE platform will allow for enhanced real-time monitoring of vehicle performance, contributing to improved vehicle maintenance and servicing, which in turn could reduce costs for both car owners and JLR.
Over the past year, JLR's connected vehicles have generated approximately 2.5 terabytes of data daily, with an average of 500,000 electronic control units (ECUs) updated per month. This data exchange, facilitated by the Tata Communications MOVE platform, will enable deeper insights and facilitate prompt over-the-air vehicle updates.
Marco Bijvelds, Vice President and Global Head of Tata Communications MOVE, highlighted the importance of seamless connectivity in the automotive industry: "The automotive industry is continually innovating to meet ever-changing customer demands. Last year, our digital fabric enabled seamless connectivity across all JLR's production sites globally."
"As part of our extended partnership, we're now powering JLR's software-defined vehicle journey worldwide and enabling them to deliver advanced driving features in their cars. The insights derived from the data exchanged through our platform will enable JLR to offer personalised customer experiences, opening doors for new revenue streams."
JLR's vehicles equipped with the Tata Communications MOVE platform are expected to be available in 2026, aiming to deliver an intelligent and connected driving experience. The collaboration represents a significant step in JLR's digital transformation strategy, offering enhanced features and continuous updates to meet the evolving needs of their luxury client base.
