LoRaWAN report highlights smart city technology benefits

Yesterday

The LoRa Alliance has announced the release of a new report by Beecham Research that identifies LoRaWAN as a networking technology for smart cities.

The comprehensive report, titled "Leveraging LoRaWAN for Smart Cities: Cost-Effective, Scalable, Sustainable Connectivity," highlights the technology's strengths in handling urban challenges such as pollution, traffic congestion, waste management, and energy efficiency through its long-range capabilities, low power consumption, and cost-effectiveness.

Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance, remarked on the increasing necessity for smart city solutions driven by global urbanisation: "Rising demand for smart city solutions is being driven by urbanization and the necessity for sustainable development. As cities encounter challenges such as pollution, traffic congestion, waste management and energy efficiency, the adoption of IoT technologies powered by LoRaWAN can facilitate improved resource management and enhance the quality of life for residents. We look forward to showcasing the breadth and depth of LoRaWAN solutions for cities and how they support urban innovation at the upcoming SCEWC."

Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO and Chief Analyst of Beecham Research, discussed the report's insights into the use of LoRaWAN in urban settings: "As municipalities continue to explore digital transformation strategies, LoRaWAN is becoming an essential component in the evolution of smarter urban environments. This report seeks to provide clear insights for city planners, technology providers and policymakers on the increasingly broad range of areas where LoRaWAN is already being used in urban environments in all regions worldwide. The potential is very large."

The LoRa Alliance will participate in the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024, presenting the findings of the Beecham report alongside various member companies. The exhibition will demonstrate LoRaWAN deployments and the technology's application in smart city solutions. Participating members include Browan Communications, iotech, Miromico, Tata Communications, ABB, Adeunis, and others.

In addition to the exhibition, specialists from the LoRa Alliance, along with members from ZENNER and Tata Communications, will conduct a panel entitled "IoT Connectivity & Data Insights to Enhance Urban Life." This session will explore how cities can implement IoT sensors and devices over LoRaWAN networks to gather real-time data and improve urban living.

The event will also feature live demonstrations from member companies. Browan Communications will present a smart-warehouse safety solution utilizing LoRaWAN to prevent collisions in warehouses. Miromico will showcase the miro Insight Lux, a battery-less room monitor targeting urban environmental challenges. iotech will highlight its IoT network solutions in Saudi Arabia, focusing on secure and scalable connectivity for smart cities. Tata Communications will demonstrate its unified IoT platform, presenting its smart lighting and parking solutions, as well as video analytics capabilities.
