Truecaller has joined the GSMA, placing the caller identification company inside one of the mobile industry's main trade bodies.

The move links a consumer-facing anti-spam app business with an organisation that brings together more than 1,200 mobile operators and other groups across the sector.

Truecaller will take part in GSMA working groups focused on mobile security, fraud prevention and caller identity. It plans to contribute its experience in spam and fraud detection as the industry develops standards for call authentication and consumer protection.

The membership comes as telecoms operators, regulators and technology companies face growing pressure to respond to scam calls and other fraudulent communications that cross borders and networks. Caller verification and trust in voice communications have become more prominent as criminal tactics grow more sophisticated.

Truecaller has built a large user base across Africa and Asia and says it now has more than 500 million active users worldwide. It also says it identified 68 billion spam and fraud calls in 2025 alone, giving it a large volume of data on unwanted communications.

The Stockholm-headquartered group has expanded from a caller identification app into a broader communications and safety business. It has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since October 2021.

Industry role

The GSMA is a central industry body for the mobile ecosystem, covering operators, vendors and other organisations. Its work includes technical standards, interoperability, policy advocacy and collaboration on shared challenges.

For Truecaller, membership gives it a formal role in industry discussions traditionally led by network operators and infrastructure providers. It also reflects the growing role of app-based identity and fraud tools in debates over how to make mobile communications more reliable for consumers.

Kari Krishnamurthy, Chief Commercial & Strategy Officer at Truecaller, commented on the decision to join the organisation.

"Joining the GSMA is a natural next step for us as we continue to grow our role in the global mobile ecosystem," said Kari Krishnamurthy, Chief Commercial & Strategy Officer at Truecaller. "Spam calls and fraud are a global problem that no single company can solve alone. We look forward to collaborating with operators, regulators and technology leaders to help drive the standards and collective action needed to make every phone call safer."

Fraud focus

The wider telecoms sector has been seeking ways to tighten identity checks and improve trust in calls and messages, particularly as scam operations exploit weaknesses between national systems. Efforts have increasingly centred on shared standards and co-ordination between network operators, service providers and software platforms.

Truecaller's inclusion in those forums may give the GSMA direct input from a company close to consumers that processes large volumes of user-reported and system-detected spam activity. That position could matter as the industry considers how technical standards and consumer protection measures interact.

Colin Bareham, General Manager, Membership at GSMA, welcomed the company as a new member.

"We are pleased to welcome Truecaller as an Industry Member of the GSMA. Industry Members are vital to driving innovation and practical solutions across devices, networks, platforms and services. We look forward to collaborating with the Truecaller team across our programmes and member platforms to accelerate impact for the mobile ecosystem," said Colin Bareham, General Manager, Membership at GSMA.
