Bhutan Telecom upgrades network with Ciena coherent routers

Thu, 22nd Aug 2024

Bhutan Telecom, a provider of telecommunications and internet services in the Kingdom of Bhutan, has announced the deployment of Ciena's coherent routing solutions. This move aims to support the increasing traffic demands and enhance customer experience, particularly as the telecom company’s users shift towards new technologies like edge cloud applications.

The deployment includes Ciena's 5164, 8110, and 8114 routers. These routers were remotely deployed, tested, and activated with the assistance of Ciena Services, which also customised the network for Bhutan Telecom. The 5164 Router is designed for space-constrained locations, making it suitable for Bhutan's landlocked geography. The temperature-hardened 8114 Router is equipped to handle the country's varying climate conditions. The 8110 Coherent Aggregation Router aims to reduce network latency and improve the quality of service for users.

Karma Tshewang, Technical Director of Bhutan Telecom, highlighted the significance of this upgrade. "Post pandemic, the local community continues to work, play and leverage digital content in the comfort of their homes. We’re also seeing renewed interest from connected tourists to the world’s happiest country. Hyperconnectivity is set to be a game-changer in helping transform Bhutan into a digital society and we’re working with Ciena to improve connectivity and reduce latency,” Tshewang stated.

Amit Malik, Vice President and Sales Leader of Ciena India & South Asia, also commented on the partnership. "Market dynamics are accelerating the push for cloud, and residential connectivity that together drives the need to leverage IP network modernisation to capitalise on these new opportunities. With Ciena’s purpose-built coherent routers, Bhutan Telecom is improving the customer experience and cementing its role as a leading provider,” Malik observed.

Bhutan Telecom is focused on enhancing the country's connectivity and digital infrastructure. The company is committed to expanding network coverage and improving communication services across the region. As Bhutan’s primary telecom operator, Bhutan Telecom is crucial in advancing the nation’s technological capabilities and ensuring reliable communication solutions for its customers.
