CelcomDigi boosts flood aid & connectivity nationwide
CelcomDigi has activated nationwide flood relief and connectivity measures across Malaysia, working with humanitarian partners to support tens of thousands of people displaced by recent flooding.
The mobile network operator said it is working with Malaysian Relief Agency and Malaysian Red Crescent at multiple temporary relief centres, or Pusat Pemindahan Sementara (PPS), across eight states. The programme targets more than 50,000 people who have moved from their homes because of rising waters.
As part of the effort, field teams have set up 60 mobile charging stations and installed 80 WiFi units in PPS facilities. The company said this keeps evacuees in contact with relatives and allows them to reach emergency and other essential services while away from home.
The operator's 24-hour network operations teams remain on standby. They plan to deploy power generators to base stations in flood-hit locations where commercial electricity fails, which the company said is intended to limit service interruptions for customers in affected districts.
Rescue and alerts
CelcomDigi's role extends beyond connectivity equipment at evacuation centres. The company has supplied Malaysian Relief Agency with four-wheel drive vehicles and rescue boats for work in severely flooded areas. It has also provided volunteers from its own workforce to support search, evacuation and logistics activities managed by the agency.
The firm has activated a Flash-SMS broadcast system for early warning and safety messages in flood-prone areas. It has added AI-based postcode targeting so that alerts reach customers in specific at-risk locations rather than broad regions. The company said it has already sent more than 5.1 million messages with flood alerts and related information.
CelcomDigi earlier outlined a flood preparedness plan ahead of the monsoon season. The company said this current mobilisation builds on that framework as seasonal rainfall intensifies across parts of the country.
On-the-ground aid
Alongside network support, CelcomDigi and its partners are distributing basic household and personal supplies for families staying in PPS facilities. Items include ready-to-eat food packs, hygiene kits, kitchen equipment and bedding sets for temporary accommodation.
The company is also providing targeted packs for specific groups such as women and infants. These include female dignity kits and baby care packs that contain personal care and childcare essentials.
Employees have organised their own collections. Staff contributions include cooking essentials and additional food packs that supplement the main relief consignments managed with Malaysian Relief Agency and Malaysian Red Crescent.
CelcomDigi said it is working closely with government agencies to align its actions with wider disaster management plans. This includes coordination on the placement of connectivity equipment, the routing of supplies and the use of volunteers.
The operator added that its dealer network and business partners are part of the response where local conditions permit. It has positioned additional internal resources and personnel so it can extend operations if weather conditions deteriorate or more regions experience flooding.
Preparedness guidance
In parallel with the physical relief activities, CelcomDigi has released an updated Flood Preparedness Kit. The material contains revised safety guidelines and a practical checklist for households in high-risk locations.
The kit is available in English and Bahasa Malaysia. The company is distributing it through its social media channels and the CelcomDigi app, which are widely used touchpoints for its more than 20.5 million mobile users.
CelcomDigi described these measures as part of its broader role as a national operator during climate-related emergencies. The company said it intends to maintain connectivity and provide basic support for communities that rely on its network.
The operator said it will continue to coordinate with public authorities and humanitarian organisations as the monsoon period progresses and as conditions change in affected regions.
