NEXTDC begins TK1 Tokyo data centre to boost AI & cloud growth

Thu, 4th Dec 2025

NEXTDC has commenced construction of TK1 Tokyo, its first data centre facility in Japan, expanding its digital infrastructure presence into one of Asia's largest technology markets.

Tokyo launch

The new TK1 Tokyo data centre is sited in Minato ward, adjacent to Tokyo Tower. It will aim to address demand caused by the increased uptake of artificial intelligence, automation and advanced digital services in Japan. The facility is planned to provide secure, low-latency access to cloud platforms and critical infrastructure, supporting a market characterised by rapid digital adoption.

Expansion strategy

The Tokyo development forms part of NEXTDC's wider regional strategy. The company has already announced projects in other Asian markets, including a major site in Kuala Lumpur. This multi-market approach targets businesses requiring reliable, high-performance digital infrastructure to adapt to evolving trends, such as AI and cloud migration across Asia Pacific.

Technical details

TK1 Tokyo is designed to deliver 28MW of planned IT capacity. Key features include a Tier IV design and construction, with the goal of achieving Tier IV Gold Certification for operational sustainability. The site will also incorporate a Mission Critical Operations Centre and be connected with NEXTDC's broader ecosystem of facilities across Asia Pacific and Australia.

Facilities at this standard are intended for use by hyperscalers, cloud providers, defence organisations, and enterprise customers who need data centre capacity capable of supporting latency-sensitive, high-density workloads. The Tokyo campus will offer fault-tolerant infrastructure and advanced security for these customers.

Strategic partnerships

TK1 Tokyo is being delivered in collaboration with CBRE Investment Management and major international technology partners. NEXTDC aims to deliver consistent operational standards and security across all its regional facilities through these partnerships.

AI and digital growth

The Japanese government and local enterprises continue to transition towards more cloud-based, automated and AI-driven operations. TK1 Tokyo will target companies seeking to modernise and scale digital operations while meeting requirements related to security and resilience.

“TK1 Tokyo is a landmark moment for NEXTDC as we extend our sovereign-grade platform into one of Asia's most important digital economies. Its location in central Tokyo, combined with our Tier IV-quality design and operations, provides customers with a new AI-ready landing zone at the centre of Japan's connectivity ecosystem,” said Craig Scroggie, CEO and Managing Director, NEXTDC.

“Delivered in partnership with CBRE Investment Management and our leading global technology partners, TK1 Tokyo strengthens our ability to support customers' growth, resilience and sustainability ambitions across the region,” said Scroggie.
